Even if it is just for a weekend, and even if it is only on certain purchases, it is nice that there is less regressive taxation happening in Tennessee this weekend. Every family that is getting ‘relief’ from the tax holiday (as opposed to just having some ’savings’) should write your state representatives and ask them to permanently lower (or even abolish) the Tennessee sales tax.
Did you know that New Hampshire doesn’t have a sales tax or an income tax? It is true. They tax gas a little higher than Tennessee, tax cigarettes 4 times as much as Tennessee, and have a higher inheritance tax. Property taxes are handled by city/county and not the state. I also recall a fair amount of toll roads in New Hampshire too.
Is New Hampshire a good example of fair taxation?

I miss the New Deal…. 90% income tax rates on the ultra-rich…
but soon, with the inheritance tax at 0% in 2011, we’ll enter a new age of vassals, lords and patricide. yeah!
